BECCLES & DISTRICT KART CLUB
CLUB MEETING 31st May 2004
The third round of the 2004 summer championships was held at Ellough on 31st
May.
COMER / WTP CADET
A good turnout of karts for the final, with pole
sitter Sam Blake away from the green light ahead of Thomas Stanway and Oliver
Hodgson. Sam going wide on an infield corner allowed Thomas and Oliver through
but quickly settled down in third place. The leading trio began to open out a
gap to fourth place driver Oliver Hindle, doing his best to hold off Rhys Malyon
in fifth. In the sunny, dry conditions, grip appeared to be very good, with all
karts staying on the racing line, overtaking was proving difficult. Bobby
Griffin however, proved to be the exception. He worked his way through the field
from fourteenth on the first lap to eigth at the finish. At the flag, Oliver
Hodgson taking the win just ahead of Thomas Stanway in 2nd spot. Sam Blake a few
metres behind in 3rd with Rhys Malyon in 4th. Oliver Hindle coming home in 5th
ahead of Simon Harris in 6th position. Michael Headland with some steady driving
in 12th place overall received the restricted trophy.
HONDA CADET
Connor Summers made the most of three good heat
finishes to start on pole. Keeping the lead for the first half of the lap, until
Curtis Ayres slipped past at the hairpin. Gordon Smith immediately pulling in
behind them in third place. By lap five, Conner had retaken the lead, which he
held to take the chequered flag. Curtis Ayres finishing strongly in 2nd, with
Gordon Smith in 3rd. Gordon also receiving the restricted trophy. Mitch Squire
coming home in 4th place.
JUNIOR ROTAX MAX
An exciting race, with plenty of overtaking between
the two Olivers, Oliver Hindle and Oliver Walker. The lap charts show that
Oliver Thorpe crossed the line in first place for the first eight laps but they
don’t show that both drivers swapped places twice on each lap. Walker taking
the lead by dominating the inside line at the first corner and Thorpe retaking
the lead on the infield corners or at the hairpin. On lap nine, Walker made his
usual move at the end of the start straight to go back into the lead, but this
time kept to the racing line giving Thorpe no chance to get past. The race
finishing in that order, Oliver Walker in 1st place just ahead of Oliver Thorpe
in 2nd. Peter Masters following up in 3rd with Jack Piper in 4th. A steady drive
from James Canham in 5th, closely followed by Jamie Fordham in 6th.
MINI-MAX
With the junior max and mini-max fields running
separate finals this time, the quality of racing was much improved as both
groups didn’t get in each others way. Pole sitter Nicholas Wones, getting away
from the lights and straight into the lead. Josh Bass and Bradley Smith fighting
over second place. Daniel Fisher on their rear bumper in fourth place. On lap
four, Bradley made his move and slipped past Josh into second. Nicholas had
already pulled out a good lead so the rest of the field were fighting over
second place. Nicholas continued to drive consistently so took the chequered
flag by a good margin. Bradley Smith holding on to 2nd place with Josh Bass in
3rd. Daniel Fisher coming home in 4th ahead of Liam Hamilton in 5th position.
James Mulley taking the restricted trophy and 6th overall.
SENIOR ROTAX MAX
A grid of twenty senior Rotax karts started the
final race of the day. Gordon Chenery on pole with Reece Broady beside him. At
the end of the first lap, Joe Scorey had come through from fifth on the grid to
second with Leyton Nisbett in third. Gavin Petty sitting in fourth was ideally
placed if the leaders slipped up. Early in the second lap, Scorey made a move on
Chenery but ended up sitting on the side of the track. Leyton moved up to second
and Gavin up to third. Not too far back in fourth was Liam Lambert, chasing hard
for those extra points. On lap twelve Liam caught up and passed Gavin and
started after Leyton. Leyton, with consistent driving was only a few metres off
the back end of Gordon. Mark Bowen showed some quality, coming through the
field, fourteenth on the first lap to fifth place on lap thirteen. At the end,
Gordon taking the win ahead of a fast finishing Leyton Nisbett, claiming a well
deserved 2nd place and collecting the marshals Driver of the Day trophy for his
efforts. Liam Lambert in 3rd closely followed by Gavin Petty.
Mark Bowen in 5th with Jamie Lambert in 6th position. David Paynter
receiving the 1st restricted trophy.
