Summer Championship Round 2 – 27th May 2006

Cadet
It had been a dry meeting to start but soon turned open and eventually wet.  The first final of the day was the Cadets, leaving the dummy grid at 3.46 with the track still wet and the rain still falling.  The pole sitter Thomas Stanway found himself with mechanical problems on the warm up lap which effectively took him directly to the back of the pack, at this point Sam Blake took the green lights first and position he held onto until the chequered flag.  James Harris started the race in 6th position but with an excellent 1st lap made up 4 places arriving in 2nd place by the end of lap 1, he could however do nothing about Blake but brought his kart home in a solid 2nd place.  Oscar Moore who started just in front of Harris moved up to 3rd place before the end of lap 1, he would resist the attentions of the other competitors to take the last podium position.  The fastest lap of the race was set by the recovering Thomas Stanway with a time of 46.07 on lap 10.

Junior TKM & Minimax
With track conditions unchanged the next final was the Minimax and Junior TKM, Andrew Moore started on pole a position which he held from Karl Cocca until the chequered flag.  Cocca in his pursuit of
Moore managed to set a fastest lap of 42.6 on lap 6.  Simon Harris was the last podium finisher moving up from 4th to 3rd place in the early stages of the race.  Lee Waters was the 1st place Junior TKM followed home by Michael Headland and Daniel Bishop, the fastest TKM lap was set by Michael Headland with a time of 44.22 on lap 13.

Junior Rotax
The Junior Rotax heats had seen victories for Daniel Fisher and Ruben Morreli, Fisher started on pole and Morreli (still on novice plates) on grid 2.  Morreli was definitely a candidate for driver of the day so big things were expected from him in the final. Fisher however was to rise to the challenge taking a flag to chequered victory by just over 2 seconds from Morreli, setting a fastest lap of 41.13 on lap 12.  Morreli could not quite keep pace with Fisher but still finished 12 seconds in front of 3rd place man Jack Piper.

Senior Rotax
4.30pm saw the start of the Senior Rotax final, Ashley Beales after mechanical problems during both practise sessions had managed to get his kart on pole.  Beales was to lead the entire race turning his pole position in to a win.  Gordon Chenery found himself starting down in a very unfamiliar starting position back on row 5, this however was not going to worry him, picking up 5 places on the 1st lap he was soon into the top 4 runners.  By the end of lap 4 Chenery was to find himself up into 2nd with only Beales to deal with if he wanted race victory, Beales however held him off until the end, the gap just over ˝  second by the race end.  Gavin Petty was to round up the top 3 starting on grid 2 he eventually finished 9 seconds behind Chenery.  Chenery set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 40.86 on lap 12.

Rotax 177
The last race of the day was the Rotax Heavy’s which left the dummy grid
4.44pm .  Mel Cooke had thus far had the perfect day, fastest in both practise sessions and taking victory in all 3 heats.  Cooke obviously headed the grid and after the lights turned green was away with no looking back, he set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 41.10 on lap 5 and more importantly was voted driver of the day by the officials at the meeting.  His closest championship rival Wayne Vickery could do nothing about the flying Cooke but managed to bring his Tonykart home in a solid 2nd place.  Steven Everitt started 3rd on the grid a place he both lost and regained from Mark Rix during the 1st half of the race.
