CLUB MEETING 23rd April 2005

The first round of the 2005 Summer championships was held at Ellough on 23rd April.

COMER / WTP CADET

After two heat wins and a third place, Thomas Stanway led the field to the first corner. Oliver Hindle dropping into second place ahead of Jake Wenham in third. Kieran Brady and Craig Pollard heading the chasing pack. For the first few laps, Thomas and Oliver increased the gap to third, pulling out a metre every lap until lap seven, under increasing pressure from Oliver, Thomas made an error and dropped back to ninth. Jake Wenham, now in second place immediately set about catching Oliver. Kieran and Craig trying their best to keep in touch in third and fourth. Lap nine saw Craig slip past Kieran for third. Staying cool, Kieran battled on and regained third spot on lap thirteen. By this time, Oliver had a comfortable lead, which he held to the flag to claim a well deserved win.  Coming home in 2nd place was Jake Wenham, finishing ahead of Kieran Brady in 3rd. Craig Pollard just behind in 4th, Michael Headland in 5th and Andrew Moore in 6th.

HONDA CADET

Toby Reynolds starting on pole after three heat wins, led from start to finish to take 1st place in the Honda cadet final. Toby also received the restricted drivers trophy. Conner Summers finishing in 2nd position ahead of Lewis Bond in 3rd. 

MINI-MAX

Displaying the results of driving in Super 1 this year, Alex Widdrington started on pole, the benefit of three heat wins earlier in the day. Staying on his rear bumper round the first corner, Simon Harris and Clinton Bridge set about keeping up with Alex. Jake Baker bringing up the rear of the quartet. On lap three, Jake passed Clinton for third place. For the next ten laps, Jake homed in on Simon and on lap thirteen slipped past for second place. Alex, with a comfortable lead took the win ahead of Jake Baker in 2nd. Simon Harris coming home in 3rd, Clinton Bridge finishing in 4th overall and as 1st restricted driver.

JUNIOR TKM / JICA

Lee Waters and Tom Cluley contested the Junior TKM final. Leading from start to finish, Lee received the chequered flag after some neat, consistent driving. Tom finishing close behind in 2nd place.  

James Brown took the win in the JICA class.  

JUNIOR ROTAX MAX

Bradley Smith leading away from the lights after two heat wins and a second, ahead of Daniel Fisher starting in second position. Steven Hopewell quickly improved his situation by slipping past Daniel before the end of the lap. Lap three and Steven went past Bradley to take the lead. Further down the field, James Lincoln and Luke Branch were battling over fourth place. Peter Masters and Ben Hughes a few metres back trying to stay in touch with Luke. Over the remaining laps, Peter gradually caught up to Luke and on the last lap passed him for fifth. At the flag, a win for Steven Hopewell, ahead of Bradley Smith in 2nd. Daniel Fisher coming home in 3rd with James Lincoln finishing in 4th. Peter Masters taking 5th place just ahead of Luke Branch in 6th. Ben Squire finishing in 7th place overall and as 1st restricted driver.    

SENIOR ROTAX MAX

Chris Lock started on pole position, Liam Lambert in second with Chris Trott in third. Coming out of the first corner, Lock held the lead but Trott had moved through to second. Lambert dropping to third, with Gordon Chenery up to fourth. Jason Baker and Paul Canning fighting over the lower places. The race settled down, with Lock opening out a five mete lead over Trott, with the same distance on to Lambert. Ashley Beales making the best progress in the early stages, moving up from eleventh on the first lap to seventh on lap nine. Restricted driver Carl Pye also driving well in the packed field. At the finish flag, a well deserved win for Chris Lock ahead of Chris Trott in 2nd place. Liam Lambert finishing in 3rd, closely followed by Gordon Chenery in 4th. Jason Baker coming home in 5th ahead of Ashley Beales in 6th. Carl Pye in 8th overall and as the 1st restricted driver.

SENIOR ROTAX MAX 177

An excellent field of eight Rotax 177 karts contested the final race of the day. Nicholas Black on pole after three good drives in the heats. Mel Cooke starting from second place. Both drivers setting off at a cracking pace, Nicholas keeping a half metre lead over Mel for a lap and a half before Mel slipped past. Coming out of the hairpin, a collision between the leading pair, put them at the back of the field. Wayne Vickery, Mark Bowen and Simon Hopkins, all taking advantage of the mishap with most of the race still to go. Mel just keeping his kart going in sixth place. Lap five and Mark Bowen made his move past Wayne to go into the lead. By lap eight, Mel had caught and passed Ian Harvey and Michael Webb, placing him fourth. Lap ten and into third, after passing Simon Hopkins. Mark and Wayne having pulled out a good lead by this time were not going to be caught. At the flag, a win for Mark Bowen in front of Wayne Vickery in 2nd place. Wayne also collecting the restricted drivers 1st place trophy. Mel Cooke finishing in 3rd spot, also received the marshals driver of the day trophy for effort in the final. Simon Hopkins in 4th ahead of Ian Harvey in 5th. Nicholas Black coming home in 6th.
