BECCLES & DISTRICT KART CLUB

CLUB MEETING 21st June 2003

The fourth round of the 2003 summer championships was held at Ellough on 21st June.

COMER CADET / HONDA CADET / WTP CADET

Fifteen Comer, WTP & Honda cadet karts started off the final series of races. The Comer cadets starting at the front of the grid as usual, led away from the green light by Alex Widdrington, hotly pursued by Andrew Moore and Oliver Hodgson. By lap three, Rhys Malyon had overtaken Oliver for third place and began to catch up to Andrew. A mistake by Andrew on lap eight allowed Rhys through into second place. By this time, Alex had maintained his speed and lines to open out a forty metre lead over the chasing group. Unfortunately due to an accident just after exit of the chicane, the race was red flagged with the result based on lap ten positions. Alex Widdrington therefore taking the win ahead of Rhys Malyon in 2nd place. Oliver Hodgson coming home in 3rd spot with Sam Blake coming through in 4th place. Andrew Moore recovering well to finish in 5th place. A good drive from Simon Harris saw him claim 7th position overall plus 1st restricted.

Daniel Fisher once again worked his way through the Comer cadets to finish in 1st place ahead of Marcus Carvalho in 2nd position.

Thomas Stanway in a WTP cadet kart drove a fine race to receive yet another chequered flag in the championships.

JUNIOR TKM

Twelve karts started the Junior TKM final. Jamie Bardwell went straight into the lead, closely followed by Ashley Ruggles and Miles Crowther. The race settled down with only twenty metres covering the first eight karts. Ashley took the lead on lap nine only to be relegated back to second on lap eleven. Peter Hargreaves forced his way past Miles with three laps to go to take third place. The high standard of driving and no unforced errors by anyone meant that Jamie Bardwell received the chequered flag. Ashley Ruggles just behind to claim 2nd spot with Peter Hargreaves holding on for 3rd. Miles Crowther coming home in 4th place. Alex Curnow finishing as 1st restricted.

MINIMAX

The Minimax series is gaining in popularity all the time, with seven Minimax karts lined up for the final. Rupert Svendson-Cook led the field away from the lights but went too wide at the first corner allowing Nicholas Wones through on the inside. Daniel Laddiman and Oliver Walker were at the front of the chasing group. Rupert tried everything to get past Nicholas for several laps, so when Nicholas failed to cover his line on an infield corner, Rupert went for the gap. Unfortunately the gap wasn’t as big as he thought and the resulting collision saw Nicholas spin off the track. At the flag, Rupert took the win but was later relegated to 5th place for his shunt. Oliver Walker having got past Daniel therefore being awarded the 1st place trophy. Oliver also received the marshal’s Driver of the Day kart trophy. Daniel Laddiman was promoted into 2nd place with Ben Sampson in 3rd. Jake Baker coming home in 4th position.

JUNIOR TKM INTERMEDIATE

The Junior Intermediate TKM final saw five drivers race around the track as if they were connected to each other like a train. Everybody trying their hardest but not able to gain a metre to get past the kart in front. At the line, Tom Brown claiming a well deserved win, with Tommy Eustace close behind in 2nd. Benjamin Firbank in a creditable 3rd spot just ahead of Ben Conner in 4th.

JUNIOR ROTAX

The junior Rotax final was contested by nine karts, led away from the lights by Ashley Beales, closely followed by Michael Groves and Robin Shute. After fourteen laps of good, close racing, Ashley Beales took the chequered flag ahead of Michael Groves in 2nd. Oliver Thorpe coming through the pack finishing in 3rd place with Reece Broady in 4th. Leyton Nisbett, managing to repair accident damage to his kart, drove well to finish as 1st restricted driver and 6th overall.

SENIOR ROTAX MAX  / SENIOR TKM 4 STROKE

Sixteen Rotax Max karts led off the mixed field. Pole man Chris Trott pulling straight into the lead, ahead of Gordon Chenery and Kevin Bishop. The leading trio soon opened out a gap over the chasing pack being led by Simon Smart and Carl Hunnibell. Despite some vigorous attempts at overtaking by Gordon, Chris Trott maintained his lead to take the chequered flag. Gordon Chenery having to settle this time for 2nd place. Kevin Bishop finishing a few metres behind Gordon for 3rd. Simon Smart coming home in 4th place with Gavin Petty in 5th. 1st restricted trophy going to Gary Lambert.

Starting from the rear of the grid, the three TKM 4 strokes fought amongst themselves for first place. At the flag, Wayne Close took the win after opening out a good lead over 2nd place driver Paul Steady. Lee Close finishing just behind in 3rd position.
