BECCLES & DISTRICT KART CLUB

CLUB MEETING 3rd May 2004

The second round of the 2004 summer championships was held at Ellough on 3rd May.

COMER / WTP CADET

Nineteen karts began the Cadet final in extremely poor conditions. Oliver Hodgson making the most of being in pole position, powered straight to the front to avoid the spray and any potential accidents. Settling immediately into second place was Sam Blake, closely followed by Oliver Hindle. In spite of the poor visibility, Thomas Stanway showed some mature driving by working his way up to third place by lap six, Oliver Hindle dropping down to fourth. By lap nine, the leading quartet caught up to back markers who allowed the leaders to pass safely. The drivers briefing regarding this issue had obviously been noted. At the flag, another win in the series for Oliver Hodgson who was also rewarded with the marshals driver of the day trophy. Coming home in 2nd place was Sam Blake with Thomas Stanway in 3rd. A fine drive from Oliver Hindle resulted in a 4th place ahead of Craig Pollard in 5th. Simon Harris close behind in 6th spot. Katie Dobson with some steady driving in 10th place overall received the restricted trophy.

HONDA CADET

The four Honda cadets starting at the back of the Comer/WTP grid, quickly settled down into a race once again affected by the conditions. Tom Griffiths going into the lead from the lights closely followed by Curtis Ayres. With consistent driving Tom stayed in the lead to take the chequered flag. Curtis Ayres close behind in 2nd place. Gordon Smith finishing in 3rd spot ahead of Mathew Cochrane in 4th.

JUNIOR TKM

Five karts in the final, led away from the lights by Stuart MacClinton, with Steven Chisholm and Tom Cluley in close attendance. Steven managed to keep with Stuart for several laps before dropping back to be harassed by Tom, trying to take second place. Further down the field, Daniel Bishop battled it out with David Evans for fourth spot. At the finish flag, Stuart MacClinton did enough to take the win ahead of Steven Chisholm in 2nd and Tom Cluley in 3rd. Daniel Bishop winning his battle for 4th place in front of David Evans in 5th, David finishing the race as 1st restricted driver.

JUNIOR ROTAX MAX

Four junior Rotax karts in the final, with a good start from Luke Branch ahead of Peter Masters and Jack Piper. On lap three, Peter slipped past Luke to take first place. Excellent driving from Jack Piper despite his limited wet weather driving experience saw him close in on Luke, only for Luke to pull off the track on lap ten, elevating Jack in to second place. At the flag, Peter Masters had opened out a sizeable lead and took the win. Jack Piper coming home in 2nd place ahead of Jamie Fordham in 3rd.

MINI-MAX

A strong field of seven karts started the mini-max final. Bradley Smith pulling in to the lead ahead of pole sitter Nicholas Wones. A metre further back, Josh Bass was trying everything to pass Nicholas but couldn’t quite make it. Lap six and Nicholas made his move and slipped past Bradley in to the lead. Bradley kept with Nicholas until lap eleven when Josh eased his way through in to second place. Under increasing pressure from Josh, Nicholas gained some breathing space by overtaking one of the junior max karts, creating a temporary road block, enabling him to pull out a few metres lead. At the flag, Nicholas taking the win over Josh Bass in 2nd place. Bradley Smith finishing in 3rd position ahead of Daniel Fisher in 4th.

SENIOR ROTAX MAX

A nearly full grid of twenty senior Rotax and two Rotax 175’s started the final race of the day. Gordon Chenery on pole as double heat winner. Liam Lambert starting from second place. Approaching the double apex corner, a series of collisions saw three karts off in to the tyres. As a result, Robert Sauster took the lead with Gordon relegated to second. Rory Brodie also taking advantage to move up to third place ahead of Liam. On lap four Rory powered past Gordon for second place. Nicky Fairman, in fifth spot was leading the chasing pack. At half distance, most drivers seemed content to hang on to their positions and not damage the kart. The top three drivers were increasing the gap between each other giving a comfortable win for Robert Sauster over Rory Brodie in 2nd place. Gordon Chenery in 3rd ahead of Liam Lambert in 4th. A good drive from Nicky Fairman in 5th, with Gary Lambert in 6th. David Paynter collecting the 1st restricted driver. In the Rotax 175 class, Jamie Brown finishing in 1st place ahead of John Roberts.
